He's expecting to hit the ground, so when he doesn't his eyes snap back open in surprise and his face goes red from embarrassment. Obviously it wasn't just a matter of slipping on ice, which happens to everyone. Hesitantly, he puts his weight back on his feet and shuffles them against the snow before he starts walking again.
